Big news has broken out of the Tailhook Association’s convention in Reno, Nevada this weekend. The Navy has disclosed the existence of an all-new very long-range air-to-air missile, the AIM-424 “Malice.” An image released by the Navy taken last April shows a Super Hornet from Navy Air Test And Evaluation Squadron 23 (VX-23) loaded with four of the weapons. Another image shows the missile installed in an F-35C’s weapons bay.

I generally avoid dramatic takes. But I’ve found myself wondering over the past 24 hrs whether we’ll look back on these announcements as the point the Royal Navy really ceased to be a credible navy. I say that with the deepest respect for the RN.

What has been announced is still largely theoretical. They hope to have it operational in around 10 yrs, based on platforms, designs & capabilities that don’t yet exist. While Russia continues to press, harass & the prospect of conflict sits on the horizon.

To me, this looks less like making the hard spending decisions and more like managing the Royal Navy’s decline. I genuinely hope I’m wrong.

Operation Eagle Hawk - the Red Arrows’ tour to the United States marking the nation’s 250th anniversary of independence - begins today, with the team departing our home. But how do we get the Hawks, that can’t refuel in the air and have limited range, there?

UPDATE: A Russian warship fired a couple of warning shots close to a UK-registered yacht in the Channel after also sounding an alert to avoid it sailing too close, a defence source said. 
Investigations are still underway to establish exactly what happened. 
From what is understood to be the case so far, the Admiral Grigorovich - a Russian frigate - appears to be having difficulty controlling its movements. It is not clear why, perhaps an engine problem. 
The warship is thought to have sounded an alert to the yacht to avoid a collision but it didn’t change course so a couple of warning shots were fired - though not directly at the yacht.  
The shots “were certainly not fired at the yacht”, the source said. 
The source said that such a course of action was perfectly reasonable. 
The incident took place about 20 nautical miles off the Isle of Wight.
The Royal Navy has been tracking the Russian warship close to UK waters for the past two months. It has been helping to escort Russian-flagged vessels through the Channel. But it was not involved with escorting a Cameroon-flagged tanker that is part of Russia’s shadow fleet, which was intercepted by British forces at the weekend.
