Last night, we started loading our fuel bundle into our first reactor. Atoms are splitting, and the core is multiplying neutrons, but we're not critical yet.
One of the biggest misconceptions about reactor criticality is that atoms only start splitting when a reactor goes critical. They don’t.
The very first fission events occur the moment the first fissile fuel is exposed to neutrons. A neutron is absorbed by a uranium-235 nucleus, the atom splits, energy is released, and additional neutrons are produced.
The difference is what happens next.
🔷 Subcritical (k < 1): Fission is occurring, but each generation produces fewer fissions than the last. The chain reaction cannot sustain itself.
🔷 Critical (k = 1): Every generation of neutrons, on average, produces exactly one succeeding generation. The chain reaction becomes self-sustaining.
🔷 Supercritical (k > 1): Each generation produces more fissions than the previous one, causing the neutron population to grow.
Criticality is not the birth of fission. It’s the moment when the reactor no longer depends on an external neutron source to sustain the chain reaction.
Think of the neutron source like the starter motor in your car. The starter’s job is simply to crank the engine until it fires. Once the engine is running, the starter disengages because the engine is now powering itself.
A reactor behaves the same way. The neutron source provides the initial neutrons to start fission in a subcritical core. Once the reactor reaches criticality, the neutrons produced by fission are sufficient to sustain the next generation. The external neutron source is no longer needed, just as the starter motor is no longer needed once the engine is running.
That’s why reactor startups are so fascinating. Long before the reactor reaches criticality, atoms are already splitting, energy is already being released, and operators are carefully measuring neutron multiplication as the reactor approaches the point where physics takes over.
The first atom splits quietly. This morning, we started fuel loading and started splitting atoms in our first reactor.
Criticality is the moment the reactor starts running under its own power. That's next.
For a full-scale reactor, criticality is a slow and deliberate process. And we are super close to the July 4th deadline.
Today, Valar Atomics became the first nuclear startup to make electricity, and we did it by powering an NVIDIA Spark.
