I hope I'm wrong.

But tonight feels like some sort of invisible line has been crossed that we didn't even know was there. The last time I felt like this was 9/11 when it was clear, without knowing the how and the what, that the world was about to change forever.

Like the rules of the game had been permanently altered and there was simply no going to back to the innocent, peaceful past.

I didn't feel like this when an attempt was made on President Trump's life. If I had to rationalise why I didn't, I guess it's because several US Presidents have been shot at and even assassinated. Somehow it was within the realms of the possible, no matter how awful.

But to murder a young father simply for doing debates and mobilising young people to vote for a party that represents half of America? This is something else.

Charlie's death is a tragedy for his wife, his children and his family. I don't pray often. I am praying for them tonight.

But I fear his murder will be a tragedy for all of us in ways we will only understand as time unfolds.

I hope I'm wrong.

Yes Christ also died for and saved Her. But no, She was not a sinner—but only because of HOW Christ saved Her, which was uniquely tailored to Her role in salvation history.

The Old Adam fell. This was preceded by the Old Eve choosing the serpent over God. Both sexes were involved, but ultimately the guilt and responsibility was Adam’s. Hence, we fell “in Adam.”

God typologically fulfills this in His redemption of the human race with basically a “reverse image” of the original couple.

The New Adam rises. This was preceded by the New Eve choosing God over the serpent. Both sexes were involved, but ultimately the credit and glory is Christ’s. Hence, we are saved “in Christ.”

This is the essence of Catholic doctrine. The glory is ultimately Christ’s, the saving work is Christ’s. But in the case of Mary, who played the unique role of the New Eve in salvation history, He saved Her differently than any other woman.

Why? Because the New Eve had to be presented with the same choice as the Old Eve: obey God, or obey the serpent. Our race fell through the action of both sexes. It rises through the action of both as well.

But for Her to make this choice, and to be worthy of bearing God in the flesh, the New Eve—exactly like the Old Eve—must be sinless.

How is She made sinless? The same way all of us will ultimately be made sinless: by the saving work of Christ.

The only difference is this: since Mary’s role in salvation is as the New Eve, unlike the rest of us, Christ’s salvific work had to be applied to Her prior to when He actually achieved it in time.

This is analogically similar to the fact that Old Testament saints didn’t go to Hell simply because they died before Christ’s cross. Rather, they were all in a temporary place unique for them called “Abraham’s Bosom,” and this itself was a mercy and grace won for them by Christ.

Thus, Christ is the savior of ALL—but the mode by which He saves is tailored to the particular timing and vocation of each of His saints.

If Mary was born in sin, She never could have said, “Be it done to me according to thy word” (Luke 1:38) and borne God.

It was only because She was created without sin (like the Old Eve)—“full of grace” (the only use of this word in all of Greek)—that She could face the same choice, and unlike Eve, choose God.

But that was THANKS TO CHRIST.

Christ saved Her, SHE DIDN’T SAVE HERSELF. How could Mary, a creature, create Her own soul in a state of purity? She couldn’t. It was completely a work of God’s grace.

As St. Augustine observed, “Let men and women alike rejoice, for Christ, the Man, was born and He was born of a woman; thus, each sex was honored. Now, let the honor accorded to the first man before his condemnation pass over to this second Man. A woman brought death upon us; a woman has now brought forth life” (Sermon 184, §2).

And elsewhere: “Our Lord…was not averse to males, for he took the form of a male, nor to females, for of a female he was born. Besides, there is a great mystery here: that just as death comes to us through a woman, life is born to us through a woman; that the devil, defeated, would be tormented by each nature, feminine and masculine, as he had taken delight in the defection of both” (The Christian Combat, Ch. 22).

Hence the Catholic Church’s very clear teaching that Mary was saved by a retroactive application of Christ’s work on the cross. It is precisely because of this singular grace and mercy that She, like the old Eve—BUT NOW AS THE NEW EVE—was sinless.

Thus, as St. Pope Pius IX declared:

“We declare, pronounce, and define that the doctrine which holds that the most Blessed Virgin Mary, in the first instance of her conception, by A SINGULAR GRACE AND PRIVILEGE granted by Almighty God, IN VIEW OF THE MERITS OF JESUS CHRIST, the SAVIOR of the human race, was PRESERVED free from all stain of original sin [just like the first Eve], is a doctrine revealed by God and therefore to be believed firmly and constantly by all the faithful.”

One thing that has bothered me since I was young was that most people in their behavior seemed to treat “religion” as “my thoughts about God.”

But if religion is something real, and if there is one God, it would seem that the proper definition of religion is “God’s thoughts about Himself and me.”

Given the scope of human history, time, and space, isn’t that a far more interesting thing to pursue?

Thus, if someone understands religion to be revealed from the mind of God, and thus not the result of our personal opinions, then the quest for whatever truth may be found via religion must be a quest in search of how God has revealed such truth in a manner that transcends personal, private opinion.

This seems to require that such truth be manifested in two ways: (1) publicly, and (2) authoritatively.

It must be public, because it is a common good proceeding from the mind of God to His creation, rather than individual creatures grasping for the mind of God.

It must likewise be authoritative—binding on all—because otherwise religion remains the creature’s opinions about God, rather than God’s thoughts about Himself and the creature. The creature cannot command the assent of the Creator. Rather, religion as God’s thought requires the assent of the creature.

And since human beings die, and generations succeed one another, the quest for the true religion would seem to require that we find how and where the truth can be and has been continually manifested through time in both a public and authoritative manner, and as such, where the same essential truth has been taught from age to age. Otherwise, religion as God’s thought about Himself and us constantly regresses to religion as man’s opinions about God.

Thus, the true religion would seem to require the existence of a public, authoritative society that transcends individual opinions, and teaches the same essential truths in every age.
