Last week at our Atlantic Spaceport Complex (ASX) in Newfoundland and Labrador, we welcomed senior representatives from the Department of National Defence, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), and the Town of St. Lawrence, providing officials with an update on construction activities and the company’s plans to establish Canada’s first vertically-integrated orbital launch capability.
The delegation toured NordSpace’s existing Space Launch Complex 02 (SLC-02) where construction started in 2025 which supports suborbital and light lift orbital launches (and is where NordSpace is awaiting regulatory approval to launch its Taiga rocket), and received a briefing on construction plans for Space Launch Complex 01 (SLC-01), where orbital launch infrastructure is now entering its next phase of development.
The ASX is NordSpace's own commercial spaceport, fully privately financed up to this point and 100% Canadian owned, ensuring uninterrupted priority range access. The ASX is the most capable launch site in Canada in terms of widest inclination ranges, largest safety distances for scalability to medium and heavy-lift vehicles, and highest approved launch cadence. Construction across SLC-01 and SLC-02 is continuing through this summer.
The ASX facility will enable the launch of NordSpace’s Canadian-designed and built space launch vehicles for defence, commercial, and civil missions. Once completed, it will provide Canada with sovereign, assured access to space, while strengthening domestic aerospace manufacturing, creating high-skilled jobs and supporting Canada’s growing space economy.
NordSpace's upcoming suborbital launches of its Taiga pathfinder rocket from ASX will serve as a critical operational test bed on both sides of the equation the company is now building for. On the technical side, Taiga will retire risk on flight technologies critical to the orbital-class Tundra vehicle, including propulsion, avionics, guidance, and recovery systems as Canada’s first commercial liquid rocket launch. On the regulatory side, Taiga will aim to provide the first real-world exercise of Canada's Commercial Space Launch licensing regime, range and airspace management procedures, day-of-launch coordination between operator and regulator, and public safety frameworks.
The ASX is complementary to the company's ongoing scale-up at its other sites including Rocket Factory 1 in Markham, Ontario, Area 66 in northeastern Ontario, and government relations office in Ottawa, Ontario.

Montreal's pedestrian streets - in just three years, there are now 11 of them! - are coveted by the Buisness community and touted by the Tourism Board. No one wants to live in or visit a city that is choked with traffic, causing annoyance, air and noise pollution.
But a city rapidly transforming with spaces for walking and linger and cycling? That is a place to go, a place to be. And a much better place to live.
Density isn't our problem, Toronto. Cars are our problem. We need more places for people.
Why would someone who lives in the heart of the city care about a super highway being built on the fringes of the region?
Quality of life. Safe streets free from overwhelming traffic, and the noise and pollution that cars sitting in traffic brings.
Highways act as funnels that dump traffic onto city streets, clogging streets where people walk and cycle.
They also accelerate and facilitate new growth and development on the edges of the urban region, adding more cars in the middle of nowhere. People end up driving into the city to do everyday stuff because they have no choice. The city is where the stuff of life, is.
In response to the first, second and third generation of sprawl over the last 40 years in the region that today has created gridlock on city streets and resulted in some of the worst commute times in the world, the Greenbelt was created to halt this environmental and financial disaster, to redirect our growth to create a multi-centred region. Suburban municipalities have been, as a result of this policy, attempting to create urban cores - places for dense urban living, places for walking and cycling. These suburban municipalities should be worried - they too are going to be overrun with cars as a result of a next generation of sprawl.
When it comes to urban development, you really can’t suck and blow. Regions can to grow up, with a focus on infill, density, walking and cycling, or out - and designed for driving and cars.
The crummy thing is that we are all in this together - the decisions at the edges of the region have an outsized impact on whether we are overrun with cars on city streets.
And this is why people in the city care about a new super highway being built on the fringes of the region.
City design is making cities hotter. Here’s the fix: the hottest spots in cities have less than 6% vegetation cover, while the coolest spots in most cities have over 70%. Add trees everywhere to cool cities. https://t.co/xiSTgJxKUN
