The point of this meme isn’t that Christian doctrine lacks depth. Scripture calls us to grow from milk to solid food (Heb. 5:12–14), to devote ourselves to the apostles’ teaching (Acts 2:42), and to mature in the knowledge of Christ (2 Peter 3:18). Theology matters.

But Scripture never presents the gospel, or Christian devotion, as something so complicated that only an infallible institution can explain it.

Paul feared we would be led away from “the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ” (2 Cor. 11:3). Jesus said we must become like little children (Mat. 18:3), thanked the Father for revealing these things to “little children” rather than the wise (Mat. 11:25), and promised eternal life to everyone who believes in him (John 5:24).

Even holy living is summarized with remarkable simplicity. Jesus said all the Law and the Prophets hang on two commandments: love God and love your neighbor (Mat. 22:37–40). Paul says the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Gal. 5:14; Rom. 13:8–10). James calls pure religion caring for the vulnerable and keeping oneself unstained from the world (James 1:27). John summarizes God’s command as this: believe in His Son and love one another (1 John 3:23). Meanwhile, Paul warns against those who reduce holiness to man-made regulations: “Do not handle, Do not taste, Do not touch” (Colossians 2:20–23).

The gospel that saves is beautifully plain: Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again (1 Cor. 15:1–4). The Light of the world came to save sinners. The Spirit convicts of sin, opens blind eyes, and glorifies Christ (John 16:8–15). Salvation isn’t hidden behind layers of esoteric knowledge. It is publicly proclaimed: “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31).

God didn’t leave us with an infallible human institution. He gave us an infallible Word, the Holy Spirit who guides us into the truth concerning Christ, and he commends those who tested even the apostles by the Scriptures (Acts 17:11). Scripture is able to make us “wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus” (2 Tim. 3:15).

The gospel is not hidden from ordinary believers, it is proclaimed to the world.
