Unadjusted GDP measures int'l buying power, GDP-PPP measures ordinary well-being. Canada-Mississippi discourse revolves around the latter. Ordinary people care about groceries and plumbers, not int'l luxury goods.

I'd add that those things are causally related.

The limits come from the nordicity and sternness.

America, in its bounty, can see nature as unending material for its use. Canada, disciplined by remoteness, mosquitoes, crop failure, and winter, is ever reminded of nature's limits.

@DrMichaelBonner I have too, and it doesn't for me. Can-Europe differences are obvious but superficial (architecture, transport). Can-US differences are subtle but deep (attitudes, relationships).

In Europe, you see the differences; in the US, you feel them.

The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade. This is not a marketing stunt. If anything, many executives and senior researchers will couch their phrasing in the press to sound sensible - but I hear the same people express fear privately. No other human activity poses this level of danger.
