@MartinVGould I've worked in animal welfare for 35 years now, and I'm still learning about new horrendous things that humans do. These last couple of years I've learnt about this and the Willis dropped ovary technique for spaying cattle....
Last week, Trump's USDA announced plans to significantly increase slaughter line speeds at pork and poultry plants. The meat industry celebrated the news. It was hardly covered, but has enormous implications for hundreds of thousands of workers.
Making high slaughter line speeds permanent will make one of the most dangerous jobs in America even more dangerous, worsen food safety in an industry already plagued with contamination and mass recalls, and cause suffering animals even more pain. 🧵https://t.co/ouUWLzKt5G
.@SecRollins today announced new actions to reduce burdens on the U.S. pork and poultry industries, allowing for greater efficiency while maintaining food safety standards ➡️ https://t.co/eAPKQ8Xo8u
@USDA@SecRollins Between 2017 and 2020, there is a strong negative correlation between the number of plants with line speed waivers and percent of weight condemned (Figure 1). Ultimately, this represents a major threat to public health (and welfare) through reduced food safety
@RGlobalism@greylmoran@USDA@Sentient_Media Dr. Cheng, a renowned poultry welfare expert, acted as a collaborator on this paper, which was carried out in Egypt. Research on welfare during slaughter and euthanasia is emotionally a very difficult area to work in, but still, unfortunately, very necessary.
EXCLUSIVE: Sentient has learned that the primary federal laboratory for farm animal welfare research has lost its probationary scientists to the Trump administration's mass firings of federal employees. @greylmoran reports:

Exclusive: the USDA’s Farm Animal Welfare Research Lab — With Just One Scientist Remaining — Dismantled by Trump https://t.co/L3YJ9gFl7h via @sentient_media
@Lewis_Bollard And yesterday, USDA terminated probationary employees. The only USDA-ARS unit working exclusively on farm animal welfare (LBRU) is now 1 scientist strong instead of 5. Not sustainable. It will be cut.
Trump has crippled USDA-ARS research on farm animal welfare. Freezing new hires and terminating probationers reduces LBRU to a single scientist. Now unit is non-sustainable. Disgrace. #FarmAnimalWelfare
My old boss and even older friend. He was a lovely human and we spent 20 years working together for USDA-ARS LBRU. Very sad, and heartbroken for his husband, Mike. Far too young to leave us.
The department has learned of the recent passing of longtime USDA-ARS Livestock Behavior Research Unit research leader and scientist, Dr. Don C. Lay, Jr. Please keep his husband, Mike Lewitz, in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
This is a brazen ploy by the pork industry and its paid-for politicians.
They plan to overturn popular state bans on cruel gestation crates for pigs through the byzantine Farm Bill.
They’re really hoping you won’t notice this.
For the first time since 2018 the International Symposium on Beef Cattle Welfare will convene in person! More information coming soon!

Great piece by @Lewis_Bollard on the current pressure being put on welfare certification schemes by certain animal advocacy organizations. #FarmAnimalWelfare
