Criminals themselves will be funding the national organised crime task team led by Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
The money will come from the Criminal Assets Recovery Account, where the proceeds of crime are channelled after arrests and prosecution.
It means the team Mkhwanazi forms will be able to rely on roughly a billion rand to eliminate criminal networks.
He will get to form his own team, with members vetted and selected from across the country.
The task team will follow a model similar to the PKTT, meaning it will collaborate closely with the NPA to ensure prosecution-driven investigations.
Mkhwanazi is targeting, among other things, tender corruption and drug syndicates.
The team will be looking internally, too, to identify and deal with anyone who has infiltrated the SAPS itself.
Special focus will also be paid to politicians and any irregular influence on policing or the awarding of tenders.
He's given an assurance that KwaZulu-Natal will not be neglected in this process, as he takes on additional responsibilities.
His deployment is initially set down for a year - until the end of March 2027.

In response to the pain & struggles of millions of South Africans, we have submitted a resolution for an ad hoc committee to investigate the #RandManipulation that has stolen opportunities from the people.
Your voices have been heard, and on 28 November this matter will be debated.
Has the DA said anything on Sibiya bringing a criminal to parliament. They had a lot to say in his favour there by the ad-hoc committee. O’Sullivan must be releasing rocks
The ANC-laden Limpopo Provincial Legislature booked and cancelled 3 sets of non-refundable Qatar Airways flights (& accommodation) costing R1.8 million in total, for the Commonwealth Parliament Association summit in Gambia.
Reason for the serial cancellations: Secretary to the Limpopo legislature, one Comrade Timothy Maake, insisted his PhD title appear on tickets, despite not being an original delegation member. Bro holds a PhD in Public Administration from the University of Limpopo. The bamboozled Qatar Airways explained that academic titles are not allowed on tickets, to avoid confusion with medical doctors—& bro threw tantrums each time, leading to the non-refundable cancellations.
Legislature spokesperson, one Comrade Andries Lekalakala says addressing Cde Maake as Mr instead of Dr is not only unlawful, invalid & vexatious, it is also a gross violation of his rights, hence the wasted R1.8 million is justifiable.
It’s not immediately clear if the Limpopo legislature intends to haul Qatar Airways before the UN Human Rights Commission, or the International Court of Justice.
This is a developing story.
Adv Terry Motau requests step down from Madlanga commission
Chief Evidence Leader Advocate Terry Motau has formally requested to step down from the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, which is investigating allegations of criminality, political interference, and corruption within South Africa's criminal justice system, report News24.
Motau's decision has prompted urgent discussions among commission officials to address the situation.
The Madlanga Commission, led by Acting Deputy Chief Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, commenced its work earlier this month. Motau, a senior counsel known for his role in the VBS Mutual Bank investigation, has been instrumental in outlining the commission's approach and timeline. His leadership has been central to the inquiry's operations.
The commission's mandate includes probing serious allegations, including claims by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi about the infiltration of criminal elements into the police service.
As of now, the reasons behind Motau's request to step down remain unclear. The commission has not issued an official statement regarding the matter. Further developments are expected as consultations continue.
This unexpected development raises questions about the continuity and effectiveness of the commission's work, with stakeholders and the public awaiting clarity on how it plans to proceed.
