Last year in Bangkok, democracy leaders and advocates came together at the Global Democracy Coalition Asia Forum, hosted by our partner @asiacentre_org, to explore the critical role of youth and inclusion in shaping Asia’s democratic future.
One message resonated throughout the Forum. Young people must not only be heard, but represented. Chaehyun Kim, Youth Representative at the Korea Democracy Foundation, reminded us that despite being a vital part of the electorate, youth voices are still largely absent from the institutions that shape their future, with real consequences for how young people experience political crises.
The discussions also examined the power and the limits of online activism. Chikita Edrini Marpaung, public interest lawyer at the @lbhpersjakarta, reflected on how digital movements in Indonesia have helped shape new narratives and mobilize action, while also carrying risks of polarization and slacktivism. @JernellTan, Documentation and Monitoring Coordinator at @SUARAMtweets , echoed that young people increasingly express themselves online rather than through traditional forms of protest.
Inclusion was another central theme. Chompunut Chalieobun, Regional Program Manager at the @WFD_Democracy, stressed that violence against women in politics persists because women remain underrepresented in decision-making spaces.
The Asia Forum 2025 showed that for democracy to thrive, youth and women must have meaningful representation, and online engagement must translate into real-world impact.
As we look ahead to the 2026 regional forums, we carry forward the insights, energy, and commitments from Bangkok. Asia’s democratic future depends on participation, inclusion, and action today.

Nantha Kumar has been working on illegal syndicates/cartels relating to undocumented foreign workers for many months. His finding was corrupt immigration officers had been responsible for so many foreign workers being allowed into the country

He even gave a list of the Big fish to the Home Minister, and the Home Minister promised to hand over the name to MACC. Nothing has come out of this, I believe

In light of his well-publicised background making accusations of high-level civil servants' illegal involvement in foreign workers' recruitment,
It’s hard to see why the MACC's first instinct was not to protect him but instead to detain him, not the “ agent”.

Is it possible that Nantha was “ baiting” the agent for more details but never had the intention to solicit money

Why would Nantha sell himself so cheap for 20k to put the story on ice, having worked on it for months?
However, the MACC Chief assured us there was no discrimination in its investigation of corruption cases. Is that so?

How was it that Azam Baki believed the agent's story almost immediately and yet had to detain Nantha for four days for questioning? Is this how a professional MACC works?

While the interrogation is not over, Azam Baki was able to say that Nantha was asking for 20k to hide the story

Malaysians must put our act together with all those organisations representing journalists and decent reporters nationwide. It’s not enough to hope and pray that our MACC will conduct itself professionally and fairly

Evaluate their work. Put them under scrutiny. Can we say whether the MACC investigation process is comparable to global standards? Measure them against the best

Are their oversight Committees working at all? How are the processes recommended by the Oversight committees enforced?

Let’s talk about MACC. That’s the only way corruption can be dealt with effectively
