Natasha Baker, the Democrat running in Senate District 22, on Sen. Ron Alting’s plans to resign if he wins the Nov. 3 election: 'Voters deserve a senator elected by the people, not hand selected by party insiders.'

State Sen. Ron Alting, facing a special prosecutor’s investigation into a series of alleged shoplifting cases at a Lafayette Walmart, announced on Facebook Wednesday he’s resigning from his Senate District 22 seat after 28 years, just 2 weeks before Nov. 3 election.
Story soon.
Despite allegations of shoplifting and his announcement that he intends to leave office, Indiana State Senator Ron Alting (R-Lafayette) will remain on the November 3 ballot.
Under Indiana law, candidates had until noon on July 15, 2026, to voluntarily withdraw from the general election. Had Alting withdrawn before that deadline, Republican precinct committeemen in Senate District 22 could have selected a replacement nominee through a caucus. (Ind. Code §§ 3-8-7-28(a)(1), 3-13-1-5, 3-13-1-7(b)).
However, the earliest reported shoplifting incident allegedly occurred on August 5, approximately three weeks after the withdrawal deadline. After July 15, only limited circumstances permit withdrawal and replacement, including certain legal disqualifications and changes in residency. Allegations of criminal wrongdoing alone are insufficient. (I.C. §§ 3-8-7-28(b)-(c), 3-13-1-7(b)).
If Alting wins reelection and subsequently resigns, Republican precinct committeemen will select his successor through a legislative vacancy caucus. (I.C. § 3-13-5-1).
