Hi #AcademicTwitter! In honour of #ADHDAwarenessMonth I’m going to make my first real personal tweet. I’m a PhD student in research science & I was recently diagnosed as an adult with ADHD. It’s the best thing that could have happened to me. Here’s why (thread):
@HarrietCannon Very true! Thought it might be nice to have assured, dedicated funding available so disabled PGRs don’t have to spend half their degree time fighting for the right to do their job safely & comfortably. But that was simply too outlandish 😅
@HarrietCannon 2/2: Apparently disability accommodations are the uni’s responsibility & they won’t set aside funds for specialised equipment/support, which host labs often can’t afford. So no point trying to encourage apps from disabled students if there’s no help once they’re through the door!
@HarrietCannon 1/2: Recently my UKRI-funded program got a pot of money to be used solely for EDI/‘widening participation’ strategies. I asked if any of it could be earmarked for supporting disabled researchers who are often driven out of lab-based HE research due to unmet accessibility needs…
After almost 3 years of dodging that virus that’s been going around, including many near-misses, she finally found me 😅 covid is not fun at all - you heard it here first!
