When reviewing statistics like these I’m sure you and me both can see exactly why I chose ‘Reducing Plastic’ as the topic for the unit of work. “100,000 marine animals die from plastic waste each year, and these are the ones we find.”
By building on my own knowledge for my unit of work and connecting with other professionals, I have realised we MUST incorporate the 4 C’s of the 21st Century Skills for modern students to succeed in school and the workplace. #21stCenturyLearning

I have learnt that engaging the community in units of work is vital. I have taught myself and been educated on some ways to do so; Create opportunities for the community to see the work, go to non-school events and use social media. Engaging all parents, volunteers and teachers.
Through the communication with fellow educators, it has made the importance of contextualised practice very apparent. It is so important to link the theories that are taught, to practical, real-world contexts that are relevant and meaningful. #ContextualisedPractice#Meaningful
According to fellow educators on my poll, ‘Waste Reduction’ is the most relevant and important topic to teach on #sustainability to our students’ in the Newcastle area. Therefore I will be creating a unit of work on Waste Reduction for the classroom. #UoNTeach
@FullbrookNat Remember to create unique opportunity’s for the community to see the high-quality work your school is addressing, go to non-school events regarding sustainability and most importantly engage parents, volunteers and other teachers to ensure the community is being engaged.
How to get children stepping toward a sustainable future? We could cut back on using plastic within school’s and teach our children about recycling. A possible next step could be to have students’ write letters to the government urging the need to act now! #UoNTeach#startsmall
@KateLinnane You could have the students’ create this poster as part of the unit of work, this would be very engaging and help to include some other KLA’s like Visual Art.
It is vital for schools to embed sustainability into their programs for children to find the values and motivation to build awareness and knowledge on sustainability issues and to take action. #UoNTeach#Sustainability
@JockThompson3@Twitter Very important. Keep in mind the teaching needs to be contextualised. The lessons you provide need to focus on concepts and content that are meaningful and relevant to students’ lives. This helps students to learn more effectively.
@NGlohe To do so as a teacher, you need to prompt students to think critically and creatively about the new concepts (allow time for this). You will also need to prompt the communication and collaboration and then have students share to the class the groups ideas of the new concept.
@NGlohe You are right, there is so much importance put on those 21st century skills of; Critical Thinking; Creativity; Collaboration; Communication. Teaching the 4 C’s is a must for any future classrooms to succeed.
I have been researching #sustainability for 9 weeks now, and I am confident in the information, resources and feedback I have gained to put a #ReducingWaste unit together for a Primary based classroom. Thank you Twitter to helping me formulate my topic and ideas. #UoNTeach
@JordanM63755403 I have also found Twitter to be a great platform to gain information and communicate with fellow educators. Sustainability is such an important global perspective, well done.
Pinterest is a great resource to discover information. It contains so many teaching ideas, posters, activities etc on #sustainability. #UoNTeach

@JordanM63755403 Absolutely. I had done a poll recently and the results were waste reduction for the most relevance to teaching sustainability around the Newcastle area at this present day, so I will have to agree with you there.
From starting to formulate my unit of work to now, I have realised just how easy it can be to teach #sustainability in the classroom by starting small and in the classroom! I can’t wait to put theory to practice and teach the future sustainable citizens of the world. #UoNTeach
