Kenyans must stop worshipping political camps and start defending principles. Accountability is not tribal. Justice is not regional. Truth is not partisan.

The real struggle is not between ordinary citizens. The real struggle is between a corrupt system and the people paying the price for it every day.

The State has imposed mandatory housing levies on Kenyan workers, with deductions calculated on gross earnings. This expands the contributory base beyond basic salary into allowances and variable income streams. Such a mechanism is justified on grounds of urgency, necessity, and public interest , implying that the funds are required for immediate deployment into housing delivery.

However, the revelation that approximately KSh 25 billion of these funds has been invested in Treasury Bills introduces a structural inconsistency. Treasury Bills, by design, are liquidity management instruments. Parking programme-critical funds in such instruments effectively sterilizes capital that should otherwise be circulating within project pipelines. This creates a clear temporal mismatch between revenue collection and expenditure obligations.

This raises deeper concerns about public finance management. The recycling of earmarked contributions into government securities, absent a transparent and publicly articulated cash flow framework, creates the perception of fungibility , where funds intended for a specific programme are absorbed into broader state financing operations. Such opacity undermines the integrity of the programme.

What to do if it starts flooding when you are driving

We are distraught by the heartwrenching loss of lives and property on account of the flooding of Nairobi following yesterday's heavy rains. We extend our deepest condolences to all those who have lost their loved once, and sincere commiserations to all that have lost their property or are nursing injuries.

The flooding crisis indicates a significant challenge resulting from decades of mismanagement in planning and derogation of environmental priorities. It is further concerning that our emergency response services have been too slow in giving the necessary intervention. The cycle of unpreparedness to deal with such occurrences and laxity in learning from them is as regrettable as it is unacceptable.

We have received distress calls from Kenyans in various flood stricken parts of Nairobi including South C, Hazina Estate, Embakasi, Nairobi West, Kahawa, Loresho, Roysambu and Parklands among others. The harrowing images we have received and desperate plight of those affected paints a daunting picture for the state of affairs, which is likely to worsen as the rains continue. Something needs to be done urgently.

We call upon our emergency services to intensify efforts to salvage the city from more loss of lives and property. This moment serves as a test for our structural planning over a problem that is neither isolated nor novel. We expect that no intervention will be spared in taking care of our people and finding lasting solutions to this mess.
