Local anaesthetic transperineal biopsy versus transrectal prostate biopsy in prostate cancer detection (TRANSLATE)
https://t.co/1Dv7fV4tIf
The TRANSLATE trial was a randomized clinical study comparing local anaesthetic ultrasound-guided transperineal biopsy (LATP) and transrectal ultrasound-guided biopsy (TRUS) for #ProstateCancer diagnosis. Conducted at ten UK hospitals, the trial included biopsy-naive men suspected of having prostate cancer following MRI. Participants were randomized to receive either LATP or TRUS biopsy, with the primary outcome being the detection of Gleason Grade Group (GGG) 2 or higher prostate cancer. LATP detected more GGG 2 or higher cases (60%) compared to TRUS (54%), with fewer infections requiring hospital admission in the LATP group. However, LATP was reported as more immediately painful and embarrassing.
Findings highlight key differences in detection rates, side effects, and patient experience between the two biopsy methods, offering valuable insights for clinical decision-making.

Shocking but sadly not surprising
⁃63% of female surgeons reported sexual harassment vs 24% men
⁃11% experienced forced physical contact for career opportunities vs 0.7% men

@rosieICM @frantait85@morefluids @Anaes_Trainees This is one area where North America is way ahead of Europe, and our study was based on work from there. We would be happy to collaborate and share our survey so data can be collected in other specialties 👍
@frantait85@morefluids @rosieICM @Anaes_Trainees Our control group was “childbearing non-surgeon partners” many of whom were medics in non-surgical specialties. We found an equally high pregnancy loss rate although unfortunately we didn’t have age data for this group. Another study is definitely needed.
Our study looking at pregnancy and parenting experiences of trainee surgeon has been published.
As a surgical trainee and a mum of 2 the results have been quite shocking but sadly not unexpected. Time for a culture change in surgical training

Our study of the experiences of pregnancy and parenthood of surgical trainees in the UK is out, please take a look at what we found:
We surveyed 416 trainees, male and female
Over half of all trainees delay childbearing and 80% regret this decision.

At the “Inequalities in Urological Healthcare Provision and Training” session at #BAUS2023 there’s little doubt that we have work to do. #EDI#EqualityDiversityInclusivity

Responses from 416 surgical trainees, sad reading:
- Pregnancy loss rate of 31%, in those aged 30-34 at survey completion pregnancy loss rate was 35%, this is 3x that expected in this age gp (11%)

We’re opening again for one last push before write up. Currently lacking general surgery, t&o, and vascular trainees. Please answer regardless of gender.
Please help if you are a UK surgical trainee @RoshanaMN@beckybeckyfish@OrthopodReg@ASiTofficial
@EBarlow92@deboraheastwood@UKPOPStudy We have data from 45 general surgeons and 30 T&O surgeons we hope to include in the final paper. 416 UK surgical trainees in total.
@JessWhitburn presenting our findings at #EAU23
Miscarriage rate of 28%
Nearly 30% trainees had no time off after pregnancy loss
22% had a complication requiring bed rest
Time for change in patterns of work for pregnant surgical trainees @NDSurgicalSci
Fertility, pregnancy and parental leave in surgical training.
We would love surgical trainees based in the UK to complete this questionnaire, male or female, regardless of current family situation or plans. More info see below
