@PhilCorlett1 @matthewrbroome I think @matthewrbroome answers it pretty well. But I also don't think threat or even perceived threat are necessary to cause distress. What about avoidance behaviors that are maladaptive but not recognized by the individual? (that gif of you logging in is all over the internet)
