@JohnSimpsonNews Thank you @JohnSimpsonNews - Mahmoudi was kind and courageous and took risks so @BBCNews could report from inside Iran, when it was allowed to do so RIP
Brilliant new substack by my colleagues @zivreichert & @JessicaCecil on the future of media in the world of AI - and what it means for society.
Well worth signing up 👇
The event showcased the long standing collaboration on this topic between London and Brussels as well as other like minded partners.
🔹 Read more about the London FIMI Forum here:
https://t.co/XmTQiO9GP5
International experts & independent researchers from the EU, the U.K. and from across 🌍 gathered to share insights and discuss potential collective responses to the growing challenges posed by FIMI.
On 14th October, we hosted the fourth edition of the #LondonFIMIforum - Countering Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI).
Elections, lessons from Ukraine, the effects of #FIMI in Africa as well as the security and defence angle were the leading themes.
Thanks to @anitalowenstein and @JessicaCecil for leading the Policy Leadership School in a discussion that is particularly important this year - the media’s role in the year of elections!
@rasmus_kleis Thanks yes - starkly highlights: good journalism matters to democracy but good journalism isn’t going to be a happy accident of current markets
Very best analysis of news industry & sobering findings. More people avoiding news & when they do consume it are increasingly rejecting news organisations’ own site/apps, taking news from platform feeds instead. Quality journalism costs so how to pay for it? #DNR24@rasmus_kleis

This is very, very sad. Solidarity with @stanfordio and very alarmed that top institutions conducting cutting-edge research on internet repression and algorithmic authoritarianism are being suppressed in the US. https://t.co/QwyUB0LBNB
Terrible to learn of the death of the wonderful Michael Mosley. I was lucky enough to work with him for several years at the BBC: the effervescent curiosity, creativity and intense kindness was always there. My thoughts are with Clare and their children. RIP my friend.
Great to see @rasmus_kleis and the @risj_oxford new initiative on AI and the news industry - with a shared understanding of the opportunities, the news industry can best navigate what is going to be a massive upheaval
🤯 Consecuencias ineludibles
Nearly missed this, but @JessicaCecil has produced a great summary of three roundtables with publishers, platforms & policy folks on (gen) AI and news held at @risj_oxford worth a read & the thread pulls out some of the key highlights (full disclosure: I was rapporteur for this)
An essential discussion during #nightofideas at @ifru_london about combating disinformation. Fake news & manipulations of ideas often shape the geopolitical landscape and impact public opinion, so it’s a common challenge we have to tackle.
@JessicaCecil@acsector@carljackmiller
There was a very high willingness among participating news publishers to experiment with new GenAI tools, @JessicaCecil found in @risj_oxford workshops, at the same time, many news organisations are concerned that their interests do not align with those of tech platforms. More ⬇️
