I've just read a 1938 account that deemed Stroud 'the horridest blot, except Gloucester, in the whole Cotswold area', which I found hilarious with it being The Time best place to live in 2021.
An 83 year glow up, an ugly duckling tale for the ages. Don't lose hope, Gloucester.

Con: the only copy I've so far found is $442 on AbeBooks, and the title includes 'Gotham', which is making searching a bloody slog thanks to Batman.
