Yesterday would have been this beautiful girl’s 16th birthday, instead it’s 52 days since you left this world💔Happy sweet sixteen my little puppy, the best #Botanydog I hope your days are full of mud, water and ramburgers💞
The Ballyheigue #NYPH was extremely soggy, so much so that we retreated early to prevent hypothermia! We still recorded 44 species in flr, our highest ever for Ballyheigue. Had we been able to finish the usual route, I estimate we would have gotten at least 50. #NewYearPlantHunt
We were blessed with blue skies while moseying around the Muckross Peninsula in Killarney National Park while searching for plants in flower for the 2026 #NewYearPlantHunt Six of us recorded 42 species in flower including obligatory Arbutus #NYPH
L-R Stachys palustris, S. sylvatica and the hybrid S x ambigua all growing within 2m of each other in a patch of wet grassland in Killorglin. Always nice to see and a new hectad for the hybrid. #wildflowerhour@BSBIbotany@BSBI_Ireland@wildflower_hour
Great day botanising around the Cashen Estuary as part of the BSBI #AquaticsPlantProject The target was Eleocharis parvula, a species that is possibly extinct in Ire. No luck but lots of other fab plants incl Trifolium fragiferum, Apium graveolens, and Zannichellia palustris.
Wonderful close up encounter with this beautiful female Woodwasp (Urocerus gigas) yesterday afternoon while out surveying in West Cork. A spectacular species of Sawfly that is totally harmless.
#StormIsha continues to develop and track towards Ireland. Overnight weather models keep the track similar to yesterday’s forecast but they increase the levels of wind gusts a little. Isha is looking like a serious storm and you need to heed warnings.
Well done Mary and co! 7 participants recorded 29 species in flower around the very flooded Muckross Peninsula- incl the obligatory Strawberry Tree (Arbutus unedo). The weather held up as well! Gutted to have missed it, well done guys, great job!🥰

Ivy Ladybird (Nephus quadrimaculatus) found new to Ireland by B. Power this morning at Drumderry, Co. Wexford. Great to finally see this species after years of fruitless bashing ivy. #LadybirdYearList species no. 20.
Super talk last night on all things Great Blasket, a place I've been to lucky to visit numerous times for work & pleasure. Important points raised on the delicate balancing act needed to manage/conserve nature while honouring the history & cultural importance that the isld holds.
