Squamous cell carcinoma kills more Americans than melanoma. Nobody's checking for it. Do this right now, takes 20 seconds:
- Run a finger over your scalp.
- Feel both ears, front and back. - Check your lips.
- Then the backs of your hands and forearms.
You're looking for:
โข A scab that "heals" and bleeds again l, the classic warning sign
โข A rough, scaly red patch that wasn't there a few months ago
โข A wart-like bump, or a raised growth with a sunken center
โข Anything on your lip that won't heal
The rule I give my patients: any sore or scaly patch that hasn't healed in 4 weeks gets looked at. Not "watched." Looked at.
Caught early, this is curable over 95% of the time. Ignored, it spreads.
If you found something while reading this, don't panic, do book the appointment. Ask about squamous cell carcinoma by name.
(Educational only, not medical advice โ your dermatologist is the call.)
FYI My Friends โค๏ธ
I have attended CPR classes over the years, but was never told this particular scenario. I was told that when your body starts sweating profusely for no apparent reason followed by what feels like a spasm at the end of your esophagus, that is your bodyโs warning sign.
When you are alone and have a heart attack, what are you gonna do? A really good post that can't be shared often enough:
1. Take a 2 minute break and read this:
Let's say it's 5:25 pm and you're driving home after an unusually hard day's work.
2. You are really tired and frustrated.
All of a sudden you experience chest pains. They are starting to radiate in the arm and jaw. It feels like being stabbed in the chest and heart. You're only a few miles away from the nearest hospital or home.
3. Unfortunately you don't know if you can make it..
4. Maybe you've taken CPR training, but the person running the course hasn't told you how to help yourself.
5. How do you survive a heart attack when you're alone when it happens? A person who is feeling weak and whose heart is beating hard has only about 10 seconds before losing consciousness.
6. But you can help yourself by coughing repeatedly and very strongly! Deep breaths before every cough. Coughing should be repeated every second until you arrive at the hospital or until your heart starts to beat normally.
7. Deep breathing gives oxygen to your lungs and coughing movements boost the heart and blood circulation. Heart pressure also helps to restore a normal heartbeat. Thatโs how cardiac arrest victims can make it to the hospital for the right treatment.
8. Cardiologists say if someone gets this message and passes it on to 10 people, we can expect to save at least one life.
9. FOR WOMEN: You should know that women have additional and different symptoms. Rarely have crushing chest pain or pain in the arms. Often have indigestion and tightness across the back at the bra line plus sudden fatigue.
โค๏ธSharing this could help SAVE a life ๐
Please wear a mask if you have flu like symptomsโผ๏ธโผ๏ธ
Maabane I sat next to someone flu-ey, in a poorly ventilated room, for several hours in a meeting a sena maskโฆ and guess what?! Who is flu-ey today?!
Wear that damn mask or just stay home. No one wants your viruses!
May 11, 2026
-We now have 10 hantavirus cases
-1 apparent 'Patient Zero' and 9 Human-to-human Generation 2 cases
-3 deaths: Patient Zero, his wife, and 1 other
-The window for new symptomatic Generation 2 cases is until about May 22nd
-Cases appearing beyond about May 22 would be predicted to be a Gen 2 to Gen 3 H-to-H spread
- In a hospital setting, H-to-H transmission is very rare
-From peer reviewed paper: "These data suggest that there was no person-to-person transmission among healthcare workers during a recent outbreak of HPS in Southern Chile in 1997, despite the inconsistent use of any precautions against transmission."
-Reference for above: https://t.co/B2eUYDCsK1
-No change in the extremely low probability for a wider public health problem
BREAKING: The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has classified the hantavirus outbreak as a โlevel 3โ emergency response, the lowest level of emergency activation, reports US media.

Hantavirus is deadlier and far more lethal per case than Covid-19. Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome has a mortality rate of 38-50% compared to just 1-2% for Covid-19.
And thereโs no vaccine for hantavirus.
Swiss authorities have confirmed a case of #hantavirus identified in a passenger from the MV Hondius cruise ship.
He had responded to an email from the shipโs operator informing the passengers of the health event, and presented himself to a hospital in Zurich, Switzerland, and is receiving care.
In line with the International Health Regulations (IHR), WHO is working with relevant countries to support international contact tracing, to ensure that those potentially exposed are monitored and that any further disease spread is limited.
The type of virus in this outbreak has been confirmed as Andes hantavirus by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases @nicd_sa, South Africa and the Geneva University Hospitals @hug_ge, Switzerland
The support of the Institut Pasteur de Dakar @PasteurDakar, Senegal and the Administraciรณn Nacional de Laboratorios e Institutos de Salud @ANLIS_Malbran, Argentina has also been critical in responding to this event.
As of 6 May, there are 8 cases, 3 of whom are confirmed as hantavirus by laboratory testing.
WHO will continue to work with countries to ensure that the patients, contacts, passengers and crew have the information and support they need to stay safe and prevent spread.
Now this was somewhat unplanned. Leading an almost 25,000 capacity stadium in the singing of Bob Marleyโs โOne Loveโ. Thanks to my good friend @kristemple for capturing a bit of it. And yes, I was actually singing as well. @WorldAthletics@WorldRelays#Gaborone26#Botswana
