Karen O wrote "Maps" inspired by her boyfriend of the time, Angus Andrew (Liars singer), with whom she lived a troubled and long-distance relationship - the two bands were always on tour.
The striking line "They don't love you like I love you" came from an email she sent him.
The video, directed by Patrick Daughters, is legendary: Karen O cries real tears at the end of the performance. Angus was late for hours on set and she was about to go on tour; when he showed up, the excitement really overflowed.
Released as the third single from Fever to Tell, it became the biggest Yeah Yeah Yeahs hit to date (#9 on Billboard's Alternative Songs). It is considered one of the best songs of the 2000s by Pitchfork (#6) and Rolling Stone (#7), and voted the best "alternative love song" of all time by NME on a dedicated list.
