This class has made me more aware of how dependent we all are on technology, especially as my EDTP topic focused on a major technology powering services crucial to everyday life. Modern reliance on these innovations is interesting but also concerning. #DigiTechS22B
One of my course takeaways is about the different types of innovations scholars have termed. While Christensen coined disruptive innovation, other academics have further distinguished these technologies using categories like radical versus incrementing innovation. #DigiTechS22B
@mackryprof I think the Metaverse and rise of alternative ways to connect during the pandemic have contributed to this likely shift in work tools. I'm not sure about VR's capabilities to share information, but I can definitely see it being used to simulate being at work for remote workers.
@floskor1 Given the Samsung Galaxy Fold, I think your prediction about the use of smartphones is highly likely. There is, however, also the rise of payment using a chip implanted in a consumer's hand, so that may be another similar, equally popular payment method.
@Sac401S I agree, especially given the rise of smart appliances in homes and the concept of smart homes. Amazon Alexa and Google Home have become ubiquitous, and with the way technology is developing consumers can expect to see more AI home products available at increasingly lower prices.
I predict that AI and machine learning will become a crucial presence in modern medicine. Recently AI identified hidden signatures of Parkinson's disease in skin cells, and I think that in the future these technologies will also be used to study other illnesses. #DigiTechS22B
@GuerrieroOlivia Hi Olivia! TikTok is definitely a great choice for the project. Coincidentally today a friend was telling me about her TikTok addiction and how the designers of the algorithm did too good of a job. Looking forward to learning more about your project!
@Sac401S Hi Sofia! I agree, AI is definitely a disruptive technology that is becoming more and more involved in our everyday lives. Whether for better or worse, the implementation of recommender systems and algorithms has really influenced people's behavior.
@kwrutgers20 Hi Kayla! Interesting topic, especially since these technologies existed even in the early 2000s (Skype) but have only recently become a lot more popular. I think it's indicative of disruptive change that Zoom surpassed Skype in popularity when Skype has been around for longer.
The focus on my project is cloud computing. Cloud computing is involved in both personal and work services like Netflix, Twitter, and Salesforce. It has greatly increased the data companies can host in a cost-efficient manner. #DigiTechS22B
@Angela525005791 I agree! I think it relates to a larger idea that the readings mentioned about being perpetually online. Whether it's for work or school, the presence of digital technology comes with the assumption of 24/7 availability to do a task or assignment.
@GuerrieroOlivia Dating apps can be seen as providing too many options in a too easily accessible way. Additionally, I think social media such as Twitter can easily influence people's ideas about dating, such as what is a "red flag" or what an ideal partner should be.
@Sac401S I agree that a larger emphasis has been placed on appearance, whether that effect is good, bad, or mixed. Technology makes us viewing a larger population of people more accessible in a shorter amount of time, influencing people's ideas about aesthetics.
Modifications such as plastic surgery have become normalized and welcomed to create a generic, humanly impossible aesthetic ideal. The modern digital age has changed beauty standards and how people view and value physical appearance. https://t.co/fy1QQM4LXM #DigiTechS22B
