Jill Rutter, Brexit at UK in a Changing Europe. Any other stuff at Institute for Government. Full Fact fan. Very ex-civil servant. My views not theirs.
The Chancellor is right about this, but the write up here misses the key point.
The Visitor Levy is a choice for each individual Mayor, not for the Chancellor or the government. Some will go ahead with it and others won't. It's their choice!
We need to start to adjust as a country to an alien concept here in England, but a routine feature of government in much of the rest of Europe - genuine fiscal devolution!
Actually John, Theresa May rejected the idea of trade barriers between NI and GB when the European Commission proposed it. It was Boris Johnson who changed the UK's position & accepted what the Commission wanted. B
Most of the NI-related focus on the EU ‘reset’ has been on an agrifood deal but ‘recoupling’ the GB electricity market to the EU would also have a significant impact.
In my day we had none of his sleaze and corruption, just robust boy stuff. My predecessor, a future deputy PM, was thrown off a bridge by a future attorney general and a future RC priest. https://t.co/13k9BGIXJj
Total pleasure to talk tennis yesterday on @bbcworldservice (36 mins). Is @RafaelJodarTeam the man to break the Sinner/Alcaraz duopoly? https://t.co/IrUlQt3VXT
I do not agree. The blame lies with my profession: politicians.
Politicians are meant to lead: deliver home truths, force confrontations, think beyond the immediate, describe a future we can only just see.
One reason we're in this mess is it's fashionable to reduce politics to bun-fights over 24 hr media cycles. The gold standard is to "take the politics out", "above politics", "independent".
In life, if you eat crisps, smoke cigarettes, scroll on tik Tok, you get weaker. If you run, read books, love your family, you get stronger. The same is true for a country.
When a country does what makes it weaker, because it's easier in the short-term, its problem is not bureaucrats - it's political leadership.
Politics is meant to bind us around common purpose. To motivate and organise collective action. When it doesn't, it's a sign a political system isn't working: parties, Parliament, the connection between votes, taxes, and power.
Much is wrong with our civil service. But we will only fix it when politicians - and parties - step up. Because it's their job to lead.
FT Mag cover: Normans, Napoleon, Nazis - the incredible political story of the Bayeux Tapestry, now heralded by Macron and King Charles as a symbol of UK-French rapprochement. With @labboudles @FTMag https://t.co/dV1gKDdIcv
Really important report from @britishprogress with a workable solution to some of the biggest and most destructive features of the UK tax system: the punishing marginal rates at £10k, £60k and £100k.
More soon.
🚨@CPSThinkTank is recruiting for the best job in Westminster - mine.
I've enjoyed every second at the CPS, and will definitely continue to be involved, but the time has come for someone else to take the reins. Thanks to everyone, for everything...

Interesting appointment of former influential Conservative adviser at a time when it’s fair to say some of the buzz about UK tech and AI is definitely returning…
OBR have revised down their forecast for net migration but this is *entirely* due to an upwards revision in the number of outwards migration by UK nationals. Still potential for another downwards shift later in the year, if the inwards migration number also drops.
I've absolutely avoided the tittle tattle around Romeo's previous conduct mainly because of my own experience of being a pushy outsider in CS. I've focused on aspects of her performance which have been effectively memory holed. 'Transforming Rehabilitation' is exhibit A 1/
My thoughts for the Guardian on the way politics and media obsess about the short term when we have much bigger problems to face.

On Coffee House Shots: When a PM is in crisis, what do they do? Sack the head of the civil service.
Having lost both his Chief of Staff and Director of Communications at the beginning of the week, Keir Starmer resolved to make it a hat-trick by dispensing with the services of his short-serving Cabinet Secretary.

🚨Rare and exciting opportunity 🚨
We're looking to hire an exceptional economist to work on fiscal policy at the IFS. We don't do this often. It's a chance to shape, carry out and communicate research on some of the highest-profile topics in UK economic policy. [1/4]
With light skies and no rain, spectators really do deserve a bit more rationale and explanation other than “weather conditions” #Ashes#AusvEng . The series has been starved of enough play already.
