@BrennansPen@StonePasto92061 Remini’s book is a quick read, but highlights Adams’ life in a provocative way that keeps your attention. He is very familiar with this area of U.S. history. And he is the best historiographer of Andrew Jackson.
Robert McKinley’s family regularly attended a Methodist Episcopolian church. At the age of ten at a camp meeting, McKinley marched forward on his own volition and believed on the Savior. He would later become the 25th president. Below is a letter he wrote during the Civil War.
@weecalvin1509@1AlexanderTed Ruckmanism is a fallacy! The KJV was accurately translated from the correct text. It is the best English translation and one of the best translations of all time. I can’t say that of any modern English version.
@weecalvin1509@1AlexanderTed There is nothing wrong with ekklesia being translated as “church” except in Acts 7:38. In that verse, ekklesia should be rendered “congregation” or “assembly.” There was no church in the OT, but this was inserted because of Bishop Bancroft’s fifteen rules.
@weecalvin1509@1AlexanderTed Tyndale was definitely not a Baptist in name. I just know Gloucestershire had a Lollard presence. Maybe he was exposed to it, whether he embraced it or not, before entering Oxford. It is fascinating he translated ekklesia as “congregation,” emphasizing the local church.
Church happenings:
A sixteen-year-old told me, “Now that I got my license, I’m going to come to church more regularly.” I responded, “Great!”
Another young lady asked me for a Bible and we supplied her with one.
A young preteen recently got saved and wants to be baptized.
In my message tomorrow, I am going to read an excerpt from one of the letters of John Newton. The famed author of “Amazing Grace” penned a library of pastoral letters on a wide range of subjects. In fact, he believed his most helpful writing was done by letters. Through these personal messages he encouraged, corrected and instructed those he loved.
As I read, I came across his counsel to a young pastor who was doctrinally sound but quick tempered in his dealings with other preachers. His words are worth reflection today…
“As to your opponent, I wish that before you set pen to paper against him, and during the whole time you are preparing your answer, you may commend him by earnest prayer to the Lord’s teaching and blessing. This practice will have a direct tendency to conciliate your heart to love and pity him; and such a disposition will have a good influence upon every page you write…In a little while you will meet in heaven; he will then be dearer to you than the nearest friend you have upon earth is to you now.”
Selah.
@weecalvin1509@BrennansPen I’m glad you have some of his commentaries. They are a wealth of valuable theology. Have most Brethren assemblies gone astray into liberalism in the UK or do some of them still preach the gospel?
