Fitch’s latest auto ABS data shows 60+ day subprime delinquencies rising to 6.65% in October, the highest level since the early ’90s.

Prime ABS delinquencies, meanwhile, stayed flat at 0.37%.

That gap lines up with what lower-income consumers are seeing right now:

Aka tighter budgets, more borrowing to get by, and growing trouble keeping up with major bills.

Big picture: Economists don’t see a broader market risk, but dealers will still feel the front-line effects via tougher approvals, more collection fallout, and heavier reliance on prime and near-prime buyers to keep deals moving.
