JUST IN: NASA has detailed how $SPCX Starship and Blue Origin’s Blue Moon will both fly during Artemis III in 2027 - a three-rocket rehearsal for America’s return to the lunar surface.

Blue Origin’s Blue Moon test lander will launch first and wait in Earth orbit for up to 30 days. NASA will then launch four astronauts aboard Orion on SLS, rendezvous with Blue Moon and dock with it. Up to two astronauts are expected to enter the lander and test its crew cabin.

SpaceX will then launch a 171-foot Starship Version 3 test article equipped with a nose-mounted docking system. Starship will rendezvous and dock nose-to-nose with Orion, allowing NASA and SpaceX to test how the two spacecraft operate together. The astronauts will remain inside Orion during the Starship test.

Artemis III will remain in Earth orbit rather than travel to the Moon, effectively serving as a full-scale rehearsal of the rendezvous, docking and launch operations NASA will need before attempting a crewed lunar landing on Artemis IV in 2028.

This is one of the clearest looks yet at how NASA plans to test both competing lunar lander architectures on the same crewed mission before returning astronauts to the Moon.
