@PRASA_Group’s passenger rail recovery programme in KwaZulu-Natal has reached another stage with the installation, testing and commissioning of a new diamond crossing at Crossmoor.

Delivered by Maziya General Services in partnership with @voestalpine South Africa (VAE SA), the installation has allowed the previous 15 km/h restriction over the crossing to be lifted to 60 km/h.

The wider objective is to restore trains in both directions on both lines at 10-minute intervals once the remaining upgrades are complete.

Grindrod has signed a Rail Access Agreement with the Transnet Rail Infrastructure Manager, formally enabling its participation in South Africa’s Open Access Rail initiative.

The agreement marks a significant step in South Africa’s rail reform journey and will support the deployment of privately owned rolling stock on state-owned rail infrastructure under the Open Access framework.

Grindrod expects operations to commence in 2027, subject to remaining operational and contractual precedents. In year one, the company plans to transport 288 000 tonnes using two allocated slots on the North-East Corridor, with four locomotives and 100 wagons.

Volumes could increase to 432 000 tonnes per annum, subject to additional slot allocations, with further scaling planned from 2029 onwards.
