An argument over money for an iPhone instalment ended in tragedy in Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, where an 18-year-old boy and his parents died after going to a hill in the Tisgaon area, police said. The teenager, identified as Kunal, had reportedly purchased an iPhone but was unable to manage the instalment payments. According to investigators, a dispute over the latest EMI payment led to an argument with his father, Murlidhar Chandgude. After the argument, Kunal left home and went to a hill in Tisgaon, which falls under the Waluj MIDC police station limits. His parents followed him, while several local residents also joined efforts to persuade him to return. The standoff continued for nearly three hours, with people at the scene repeatedly trying to convince the teenager to step away from danger. A video from the incident showed people attempting to reason with Kunal. One man told him, “Live for your mother,” to which the teenager replied, “No, I have to die. That remains the only way.” Sanjay Jadhav, a former sarpanch of Tisgaon village, was among those who tried to persuade him. He said locals even offered to arrange an iPhone 15 Pro for the teenager. Jadhav said, “We pleaded with him a lot, that he should look at his mother, that he shouldn’t jump, that he was educated and had a future ahead of him. We made every appeal we could.” Around 1 pm, Kunal’s father approached him and attempted to bring him away from the edge. During the intervention, both lost their balance and fell into the gorge. Kunal’s mother, Sangeeta, witnessed what happened and subsequently also died after falling from the hill. All three family members died at the scene, police said. Their bodies were recovered and sent for post-mortem examinations. A case has been registered and further investigation is underway. The incident was witnessed by local residents and tourists, while parts of the attempts to persuade Kunal were recorded on video. Police have not confirmed reports suggesting that the teenager may have been dealing with depression.
