Before I spoke to parents of severely autistic children, I did not realise that neurodiversity sounded like a loaded term to some of them. To me it sounded inclusive and non-pathologising. To some of them, it sounded dismissive and minimising. Their children, they said, were not just different. They were disabled - and it didn’t help them to blur the line between difference and disability. Attitudes towards them didn’t change because another celebrity had announced their autism diagnosis. It didn’t help them to break down autism stereotypes when their child fitted that stereotype.

They said that when activists said that it was dehumanising to talk about deficits, impairments and disorders, they heard ‘You don’t see our children as fully human’. They said, their children are impaired, and that does not make them any less valuable as humans.

I’ve learnt that loaded language is in the ear of the beholder, and that what sounds inclusive and accepting to me can sound rejecting and exclusive to someone else.

Perspective is everything, we have to keep listening.
