Had Levin not posted this, the Axios report could have been dismissed as rumor, speculation, selective sourcing, or even misinformation. The White House could have challenged the reporting, questioned the sourcing, or simply denied the characterization.

Instead, this response shifts the discussion away from whether the report is accurate and toward who leaked it. By framing the leak as damaging, illegal, and harmful to U.S. and Israeli interests, he effectively lends credibility to the underlying story and elevates its significance.

Looking at this purely through a (crisis) comms lens, I’m struggling to see the strategic advantage. If the objective was to undermine the report, this does the opposite. It turns a story that might have been disputed into one that now appears important enough to warrant calls for an FBI investigation.

The result is that attention moves from the merits of the reporting to the assumption that the reporting itself is substantially true. That’s usually not where you want the conversation to go if your goal is containment. Unless your objective is to signal something else entirely.
