There’s a group of incensed people who think Steinem’s death is an opportune moment to discredit her work and appear intellectually edgy. Name one major social movement that escaped state infiltration… the Civil Rights Movement? The Black Panthers? Any modern African political landscape?

Infiltration and covert intervention are historical features of political struggle; their presence, however, does not invalidate the work of those movements or the individuals within them.

Steinem’s institutional associations can be scrutinized without retroactively erasing the movements’ achievements. If we’re genuinely concerned about the CIA, perhaps we should engage with the machinery of power rather than exploit people’s deaths for cheap intellectual posturing.
