JUST IN: 🇮🇸🇷🇺 Russian Threat Forces Iceland to Prepare for a War It Has Never Fought

Iceland has no army, navy or air force, but growing Russian submarine activity and rising military competition in the North Atlantic are forcing Reykjavík to rethink its defence strategy.

🇮🇸 Iceland has adopted its first formal defence and national security policy, while its Coast Guard operates patrol vessels and four radar complexes to monitor the country’s airspace.

NATO is also reinforcing the island. US P-8 Poseidon aircraft are conducting anti submarine missions, while Belgium has deployed four F-16s and 105 personnel to Keflavík.

The country is taking part in NATO exercises focused on protecting critical infrastructure, sea routes and the strategically vital Greenland Iceland UK gap.

Meanwhile, a growing Icelandic movement is calling for a national defence force of 2,000 personnel backed by a 2,000 strong reserve.
