@EdJHanson About a month after corn planting I plant a four way mix of oats flax alfalfa and rye and also side dress 28% in the same operation. My yield goal for soybeans is 50+ bu/per/ac.
These aerial photographs are an excellent example of strip grazing on cover crops.
Strip grazing is when livestock are given access to one small section of a field at a time, letting them graze evenly while the rest of the cover crop rests and recovers.
While it requires a bit of preparation and labor, strip grazing brings a multitude of benefits to the soil, such as...
๐พ High impact and longer rest periods - Livestock create a beneficial disturbance followed by extended rest, allowing soils and plants time to recover and strengthen.
๐พ Improved nutrient cycling - Manure and urine are distributed more evenly across the field, returning nutrients directly to the soil where theyโre most needed.
๐พ Soil Armor - The higher herd density encourages more trampling, pressing crop residue into the surface to form a protective layer over the soil.
Thanks to Juan Urbisaglia for these amazing photos!

Thanks to a great group of ag policy makers representing many national wildlife interests we had a fun afternoon of #soilhealth school on the Breker farm. Putting the shovel in the ground never gets old.#cdplodge#pairrow60โcorn.
Down in the flats harvesting a beautiful #pairrow60โ corn crop while a wedding is going on at #cdplodge on the hill. The covers are as good as Iโve seen them, working on getting some four legged creatures out here.
