The Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) was a planned 54-mile underground particle accelerator in Ellis County, Texas, near Waxahachie (about 30 miles south of Dallas). Construction started in the early 1990s after site selection in 1988, with roughly 14 miles of tunnel dug and about $2 billion spent before Congress canceled it in 1993 due to cost overruns.
After cancellation, the main developed campus and buildings were deeded to Ellis County. The county sold the core site in 2006 to an investment group (Collider Data Center LLC, tied to J.B. Hunt) that planned a data center but did not proceed far. In 2012, local chemical company Magnablend purchased the property, renovated the abandoned buildings (which had been vandalized), and reopened the site in 2013 for chemical manufacturing and blending, especially for oilfield and industrial uses.
Today, the main SSC surface facilities operate as a chemical production, manufacturing, and packaging plant under Univar Solutions (Magnablend became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Univar in 2012). The partially built tunnels were stripped, flooded for preservation, sealed, and remain underground but unused and inaccessible. The site is private, secure industrial property with no public access.
Land ownership: The core main-site campus is privately owned by Univar Solutions (a global chemical distribution company taken private in 2023 by affiliates of Apollo Global Management, with a minority stake from ADIA). Broader surrounding lands acquired for the full project ring were mostly sold off or returned to private owners after cancellation.
In essence, a once-ambitious (but unfinished) world-class physics project has been repurposed for over a decade as a working industrial chemical facility on private land.
@elonmusk As cybercabs remove safety riders/drivers and open the service up to general public they need to add “Document Ride” for the first 4 rides for new users. A video showing the route and the new riders reactions provide:
1. Documents most users 1st few rides in an Cybercab
2. Promotes “good” behavior
3. Provides social media fuel to spread the Tesla’s future
4. Displays the confidence Tesla has in autonomous driving.
@TeslaLarry Larry your analysis is spot on Tesla seems to be very comfortable stretching for lofty goals where others dare not venture. Elon’s superpower is selecting team members who execute to achieve these lofty goals.
Larry thank you for your thoughts and insights. As I read your analysis I could not help but see the parallels between this system and Power Over Ethernet. IMHO it seems diagnostic and troubleshooting will be enhanced allowing for much lower maintenance cost going forward. ICE cars electrical systems fail over time and repairs are costly due to specialized diagnostic equipment and time required to isolate the problem and identify the replacement part. Congratulation Tesla on another innovation!
