@clem_burke Greatest drummer no one ever talks about. What an incredible musician/artist, whose bandmates appreciated him greatly. Thanks so much for mentioning his name!
Joe's first year was broadcasting the great Cal team with Chuck Muncie, Wesley Walker, Steve Rivera, Fred Besana, Ted Albrecht and Joe Roth when the Golden Bears were co-Champions of the Pac-8 along w/ UCLA. Joe Starkey is a Cal legend - and a true gentleman.
Joe Starkey, the long-time voice of @CalFootball and the author of "the band is on the field" during The Play in the 1982 Big Game, announces the 2022 season will be his last.

@whatjoewrote Ride north along the Isar to Garching...about seven or eight miles each way if you start from the Hofgarten and ride back the same way. It's flat and the scenery is great.
@deesnider One for consideration: "So I set sail in a teardrop and escaped beneath the door sill, because the smell of her perfume echoes in my head still." Sixto Rodriguez, "Cause."
Joe Roth, the only @CalFootball player ever to have his jersey retired, was born May 29, 1955. A brilliant quarterback & top NFL prospect, Joe was diagnosed with terminal melanoma during his senior year at @Cal. He played out the season with almost unimaginable courage & grace.
Incredible pic. Joe never let on to his teammates, coaches or friends that he wasn't feeling well. He couldn't walk 25 days after he played in this game...a vicious adversary, melanoma can spread quickly and overwhelm its victims, even a 21 year old football star. He loved Japan.
34 days before his death, @CalFootball QB Joe Roth ran onto the field to introduce himself at the 1977 Japan Bowl. Today, on the 45th anniversary of his death, we are happy to share a rare photo of Joe - one of the last of him in a football uniform. #DontQuit
@mattburrows It's awesome that you care about the issue. So do the filmmakers! It is dedicated to the sister of the co-Director, who died from melanoma and is the sole reason the film was made. Thanks so much for your interest in Joe's legacy.
Joe is a wonderful part of Cal Bears History. When he passed on this day in 1977, he departed in his College Ave. apartment with a ravaged body, but full and courageous heart, having given everything he had to his friends, teammates and University community that had embraced him.
The full-length feature "Don't Quit: The Joe Roth Story" is available on Amazon, Google Play and ITunes. Every @Cal alum and fan should see it. @JoeRothFilm@CalFootball@CalAthletics
@mattburrows Great point about melanoma! It is mentioned quite prominently throughout the film, defined by his Doctor (M. Friedman) early on and then constantly updated as his case progressed. It was an essential aspect to his biography and the family's wishes that it got significant mention.
Happy Birthday to legendary @Cal quarterback Rich Campbell! By 1981 he held Cal records for most passing yards (7,174), consecutive complete passes (21) & completion percentage (64.3). He set an NCAA record with 43/53 completions vs. Florida and was a first round NFL draft pick.
MS affects millions, as does Covid. To think David Campbell battled both with stoic determination is humbling + inspiring...his smile also has the same warmth and kindness as Joe Roth...
