Jim Morrison of The Doors wrote “I am the Lizard King, I can do anything” in a long theatrical poem called Celebration of the Lizard (late ’60s). Part of it became the song “Not to Touch the Earth” on Waiting for the Sun (1968), and the full piece showed up later on the live album Absolutely Live.
He used the lizard as a kind of primal/shaman persona — the part of himself that claimed it could break every rule. Fans ran with it and “the Lizard King” stuck as his nickname.
