๐ฆ What Happens When Someone Dies from Ebola?
โ ๏ธ Ebola remains very infectious after death. The virus can still be present in blood and other body fluids, which means touching or preparing the body can spread the disease.
๐ Why Special Burial Procedures Are Needed
๐ง Person dies from Ebola โ
๐ฆ Virus may still be present in body fluids โ
๐คฒ Touching or washing the body can spread infection โ
๐จโ๐ฉโ๐ง Family, healthcare workers, or community members may become infected โ
๐ก๏ธ Safe and Dignified Burial procedures help stop transmission
๐ก๏ธ Safe and Dignified Burial (SDB)
๐ท Trained burial teams are responsible for handling the body safely.
They typically:
๐งค Wear protective equipment (PPE)
๐ซ Avoid direct contact with body fluids
๐งผ Disinfect the body and surrounding area
โฐ๏ธ Place the body in a protective body bag
๐ Conduct the burial respectfully while reducing infection risk
๐ Follow public health protocols established during Ebola outbreaks
โค๏ธ Why This Matters
Safe burial practices help:
๐จโ๐ฉโ๐ง Protect family members
๐ฅ Protect healthcare workers
๐๏ธ Protect the community
๐ Reduce the spread of Ebola during an outbreak
Key Message for us all
๐ฆ A person who has died from Ebola can still transmit the virus.
๐ก๏ธ Safe and Dignified Burial by trained teams is an important measure to prevent further infections while treating the deceased with respect and dignity.

Misinformation is not just a side effect of this Ebola outbreak, it is helping drive it.
This article from the Sunday @thetimes shows how fear and rumours are undermining response efforts in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
At the @IFRC, our strength is local: volunteers embedded in communities, building trust, addressing fears, and saving lives.
Epidemics start, and end, with communities.

One day, I was very stuck financially. I reached out to a brother I knew but he dodged me.
Then this brother I was told I shouldn't call "my brother", just sent me money without a condition.
That day, I understood who my brother was; I understood the Words of the Good Teacher.
Our National Society has stepped up efforts to strengthen Ebola preparedness across Ugandaโs high-risk border districts, as leaders, health workers, and humanitarian responders convened in Bundibugyo and Ntoroko with a shared goal of safeguarding communities and preventing cross-border transmission into vulnerable populations.
In both districts, strategic District Task Force meetings brought together Partners including the Red Cross, government leaders, Ministry of Health officials, and the World Health Organization (WHO) to enhance coordination, preparedness, and rapid response systems in areas considered highly vulnerable due to their proximity to the Democratic Republic of Congo and the constant movement of people through porous border points.

We donโt lack the science to predict disasters. We lack implementation.
Early action makes early warning work โ and the most expensive disasters are the ones we see coming but choose to ignore.
At IFRC, we know supply will never keep up with rising demand. Hazards are intensifying, resources are finite. So the smartest move is to reduce demand by preventing hazards from becoming disasters in the first place.
That means using what we now have more than ever before:
โข Information before a hazard hits
โข Foresight to imagine what could be
โข Local knowledge from communities who understand risks best
โข Technology that turns that knowledge into actionable insight
When we combine these, early and anticipatory action becomes possible โ and it saves lives and livelihoods. Itโs humanitarian economics: act now to avoid paying far more later.
Early warning + early action = winโwin.
For communities who are listened to.
For funders who avoid massive response costs.
We have the knowledge. We have the tools. Now we need the will to turn prior knowledge into action.
Our thoughts are with the communities across southern China affected by the devastating floods since mid-May 2026 - lives lost, families displaced, and homes and infrastructure damaged in Chongqing, Hunan, Guizhou, Hubei and beyond.โจโจWe sincerely appreciate the swift and coordinated response of the Red Cross Society of China at all levels, rapidly mobilizing emergency mechanisms, dispatching relief supplies, and supporting evacuation, shelter, and medical needs in close coordination with government efforts.โจโจIn times of crisis, solidarity and rapid action matter most. Preparedness saves lives and ensures rapid action is taken.
Our ambulance crews across different branches are undergoing reorientation on Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) response to strengthen preparedness and emergency response capacity.
The orientation for the URCS and Nebbi Hospital ambulance teams focused on effective coordination before, during, and after an outbreak. Sessions covered preparedness, safe case management and transportation, Infection Prevention and Control (IPC), communication, and referral coordination to ensure rapid and effective response during emergencies.
Pictured in white is the Kampala team after completing the orientation session.

โOur collective response requires strong coordination, timely action, and trusted community engagement. We appreciate the Uganda Red Cross Society for the swift support and commitment demonstrated from the onset of this response,โ said Dr. Innocent Mugume of Kabarole District.
The remarks were made during a coordination meeting held today to strengthen alignment on priority response pillars supporting the ongoing Ebola Bundibugyo outbreak response in the Rwenzori and Albertine regions.
Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) and the Kabarole Regional Public Health Operations Team convened the meeting, during which the National Society reaffirmed its commitment to supporting national response efforts through coordination, Risk Communication and Community Engagement (RCCE), Infection Prevention and Control (IPC), surveillance, emergency response, psychosocial support, safe and dignified burials, volunteer mobilization, and cross-border screening.
The meeting underscored the critical importance of coordinated multi-sectoral efforts in strengthening preparedness, protecting communities, and stopping the spread of Ebola at the community level.
