Personal and professional views on waste and the environment, increasingly angry anti-litter activist, the Hammers, injustice and grumpy old man stuff.
Environment Agency investigation sees three individuals convicted for dumping 26,000 tonnes of illegal waste https://t.co/essFjLszZn Important result. Let's hope the punishment fits the crime?
@CleanStreetsApp Looking at the report though, some of these convictions were not for fly-tipping, which is an offence under s.33 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990
@CIWM Shame they didn't announce measures to help councils enforce against fly- tipping and fulfill their duties to keep land free of litter and refuse. This will have minimal impact.
Council and police try to stop Kent dumping https://t.co/jymjsJOMiS How has this continued at this scale for 'years'? Can prosecute under planning and waste law, shut the site, or get an injunction.
@CleanStreetsApp@BucksFlyTipping Of course he won't get five years. The court needs to consider the costs being avoided by fly-tipping and the cost to the landowner to clear up and fine him accordingly. The EA could also remove the builder's carrier's registration.
@cleanupbritain @rugbybc @coventrycc totally appalling but not unusual. Whichever authority is responsible is in breach of its duty to keep the highway clear of litter and refuse.
Defra halts new EfW permits after Wisbech row https://t.co/HsDKNKBEwP It is not for Defra Ministers to get involved in the EA's decision to grant (or not) an individual environmental permit. It's for the planning system to assess need and capacity. This is an abuse of power.
@cleanupbritain@SteveReedMP So we must not allow it by ensuring local authorities fulfil their duties to keep highways clear of litter and refuse and punishing the culprits,
@EnvAgencyMids the big issue is what's the best way to remove the risk without further suffering. You either prevent the fugitive emissions by installing additional gas management controls or remove the waste producing the H2S and put in separate cells to meet Landfill Directive requirements?
@WullieHalliday@cleanupbritain@EamonnHolmes@Brentwood_BC@on_lothianbuses I was seeking a Litter Abatement Order under s.91 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. Can't be used other than against a 'litter authority'. Suggest you complain to bus company or ask local council to act against the landowner.
@cleanupbritain Two-thirds of fly-tipping is of household waste or similar that can be deposited free of charge at Household recycling sites. The remainder is businesses avoiding costs and criminals collecting cheaply and dumping indiscriminately.
@cleanupbritain@BucksFlyTipping I wonder how many people understand it's our own fault for paying people like to remove their waste in the first place.
