Deep inner suffering inevitably arises when the human person is reduced to performance, consumption, or a statistical datum. Many young people today live under the yoke of expectations to perform, immersed in an exasperated competitiveness that generates anxiety, fear of not measuring up, and disorientation.
"I just want people to know that Charlie's family, his daughter, is going to live without a dad. His wife is going to live without a husband. That's not okay, that's horrible, and no one should be justifying that."
This is someone on the left. I don't care if people think it's performative. I'm glad he's saying it. I'm glad he's telling people to unfollow him for justifying political terrorism. You should not allow stupid people and pundits and podcasters to convince you that people who disagree with you politically are incapable of being sincere human beings who are horrified by senseless violence and that they can only be your mortal enemy.
@DamianCr0ss@InezFeltscher And the shooter has been arrested and will be prosecuted. Whatever you may think of Martin Luther King Jr. personally, his movement was highly effective because the violence against it disgusted normal people.
“Love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you.”
@PhilippusArabus When I was a child, I read a Shell gas station pamphlet which recommended this as a way to help protect against car jacking and crime. It’s harder to be boxed in or surprised if you back in.
@FeserEdward@ledzeperous@mfjlewis Could the Church say “Under X conditions, the death penalty is, while not an intrinsically evil thing, unjust to use?”
In other words, could this death penalty teaching be interpreted as “under X conditions that prevail in modern times, it is unjust to use the death penalty”?
@EricRSammons As someone who has worked jobs with odd hours which are necessary on Sunday, Saturday vigil Mass was extremely convenient.
For instance, I used to have a job feeding horses several times a day. Each time took 2-3 hours.
@joeyhiles1 Anyone whose first question is whether an opinion is “old-fashioned,” rather than whether it is true, is the one who should not be listened to
Regarding women in the military, there’s a larger societal aspect that people don’t think about:
People die in war. If there are too few men, that is not as big a problem as too few women. Too few women, and there’s a group of alienated men who sit around causing trouble.
@ConceptualJames Many Latin American nations had classical liberal factions during the 19th century. Think Mexico with Benito Juarez, or the Liberal Party of Bolivia or Brazil.
@AmPaleocon Those are often matters of prudential judgement. Sometimes they are matters of morals.
We are required to agree with the moral principles taught by the Church with regard to immigration, but we can have rightful differences of opinion on how they apply in various situations.
@AllyRptln@jeremykauffman I wouldn’t say that Jews support things that hurt non-Jews, as if they are a malicious group. Rather, Jews are a minority outside of Israel, and an often persecuted or stigmatized one.
So, given this, like many minorities, they tend to support left-wing appeals to universalism.
@jeremykauffman Consider, for example, Czarist Russia. Mainstream Russian society was often hostile to them, even leading to pogroms.
So, you can see why the universalism and anti-establishment stance appealed to by socialism and communism was appealing to some Jews.
@jeremykauffman It is not intrinsic to Jewishness - there are Jews across the political spectrum - but Jews are a minority in most places, and an often persecuted one. So, like many minorities, they tend to gravitate towards the universalist message of left-wing politics.
If President Biden is not fit to *run* for President, then he is also not fit to *be* the President.
Imagine if we had another Cuban Missile Crises. Do you trust President Biden to be negotiating?
He should resign the presidency for the safety of the US and the world.
