Today's Black American (Freedmen) inventor or innovator is Dr. Joan Murrell Owens. Dr. Owens was a marine biologist even though she could not dive due to her having sickle cell anemia. Still, she discovered an entirely new genus of button coral—the Rhombopsammia— along with three new species, which she named after a snowflake, Squires, and her husband. She added to our understanding of the mysterious sea. #BlackHistoryMonth

Meet Willie Hudlin and Leo Sullivan—two pioneers who helped shape representation in animation when it was nearly nonexistent for Black audiences.

Together, they worked behind the scenes to bring Black stories, characters, and culture to life through animation. When opportunities were limited, they built their own path.

🎬 Their work contributed to projects that:
• Showed Black families, humor, and everyday life
• Created characters kids could see themselves in
• Opened doors for future Black animators and creators

One of the most recognizable results is Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids—a show that entertained, educated, and uplifted.

Representation isn’t just about visibility—it’s about identity.

When children see themselves reflected in positive, creative ways:
• Confidence grows
• Possibilities expand
• Dreams become real

This couple didn’t just create cartoons. They helped shape how generations of Black children saw themselves.

Today's Black American (Freedmen) is Dr. William Augustus Hinton. Dr. Hinton developed a test that became the standard syphilis test for decades in the United States of America, the Hinton Test. His test was so much more accurate than previous syphilis tests that it was adopted by the U.S. Public Health Service. While his test is no longer the standard today, it influences current testing methods. #BlackHistoryMonth

Today’s Black American (Freedmen) inventor and innovator is Dr. Myra Adele Logan. In the 1940s, Dr. Logan became the first woman of any race to perform open-heart surgery and the ninth person overall to perform such an operation. She also contributed to the development of the antibiotic Aureomycin and to advancements in X-ray techniques that improved the detection of differences in tissue density, aiding in the identification of tumors. #BlackHistoryMonth

Today’s Black American (Freedmen) is Paula T. Hammond. Dr. Hammond is a leading chemical engineer who developed polymer-based, nanoparticle drug delivery systems. Her work focuses on engineering nanoparticles that can evade the immune system, circulate through the body, and deliver medication directly to targeted tissue.
Her research has primarily been applied to chemotherapy, inflammatory, and infectious diseases, improving the precision and effectiveness of treatment.
Her work is still being actively tested in early-stage human trials, and the field she helped advance, nanoparticle drug delivery and controlled release systems, is already used in modern medicine.
