Had a lot of fun tonight making my debut as the 10th In-Arena DJ in franchise history for @HFXMooseheads! It was a nerve wracking start and a blip or two but it was so exciting rocking the rink for the crowd in the Q! Let’s do it all again next Friday!
@Chapsisrockinit@RobbFenton@CHLMemorialCup It hasn’t been a Junior A Championship since Major Junior became a thing in 1970. Junior A have the Centennial Cup. The Memorial Cup already has a massive amount of eyes on the tournament and it’s the most prestigious event in Junior Hockey outside of the WJC.
@Chapsisrockinit@RobbFenton@CHLMemorialCup The BCHL is still not a Major Junior League. It was a Junior A League and there’s what it remains even now when they separated. A top BCHL team may be able to compete- but it’s not the same level. I highly doubt that USA Hockey would allow the USHL to join the CHL either.
@RobbFenton@simsauce@CHLMemorialCup And Rimouski’s performance was also quite unexpected. They were one of the top teams in the country all that year- but had a bunch of challenges come the Memorial Cup after they lost to Moncton in the League final.
@Chapsisrockinit@RobbFenton@CHLMemorialCup It wouldn’t make sense to have the USHL and the BCHL as they’re either not CHL Leagues or, in the case of BC, not a Major Junior level league.
@RobbFenton@CHLMemorialCup Showings like what Kelowna had are rare- hence why we’ve seen 4 hosts go on to win Memorial Cup in recent years. The Frozen Four is massive different scenario as it’s run by NCAA and often times even pro teams- not a “home team”. They moved away from neutral site for that reason.
@Ken_Campbell27@GeneralsUpdates It was never that way. From 1971-1982, the CAHA organized it and held it at a neutral site before it became the current format in 1983 with a specific host team selected.
@Ken_Campbell27@GeneralsUpdates Just because it’s Junior Hockey doesn’t mean it isn’t a massive endeavour to plan that doesn’t just come together in a week. They go through a thorough selection process to determine where the tournament belongs- it can’t just be thrown together in 6 days in a random city.
@johngordonoke@DanRussellST No. There were 2 years that the host team withdrew from competing in the Memorial Cup due to pool results- but they were never kicked out.
@cycletourist66@DanRussellST Having the Mem Cup round robin all over Canada would massively add too much cost to getting to an overall winner (especially the double round robin you’re suggesting). Part of what makes the Memorial Cup special is the festival of hockey that it is.
@DavidB44050@DanRussellST They always look at the competitiveness of the roster as part of the bid process. Part of what would have gone into this year would have also been compensating Kelowna for the cancellation of the 2020 Memorial Cup that they were supposed to host.
@BillPetes1987@DanRussellST It takes about 2 years to properly plan a Memorial Cup. Even deciding in the fall of the same season doesn’t really help you truly know how competitive a team is- as the host team usually does a lot of trades at the deadline to bring in more to their lineup.
@Ken_Campbell27@GeneralsUpdates Simple reason why not- it takes 2 years to put together a Memorial Cup. It can’t be planned in the 6 days that is between the league championships and Memorial Cup. Add in that not every CHL team has the capacity to host a Memorial Cup with everything else that’s needed.
