It’s genuinely hard to think of a programme that better encapsulates ‘public service broadcasting’ than Radio 4’s The World Tonight.

I could certainly come up with a very long list of shows which could equally sit on any commercial outlet and that - even if gaining higher audiences - the BBC would not be the worse off without.

Respect Matt Brittin and the BBC does need to make tough choices but hope there is a rethink here.

Very sad to hear The World Tonight is being axed by the BBC. Newshour is a great programme but it isn’t a substitute.
Radio 4 and its audience won’t have a domestic facing outlet after 1800.
I hope audiences now understand the challenges facing the BBC.

Yes, the BBC has to live within its means but if being a public service broadcaster is central to its mission The World Tonight is not the programme to cut. It takes a world view & intelligently & has been a nightly briefing for people like me since I discovered it at university.

Very sad to learn that Radio 4's The World Tonight is to be killed off in the latest round of BBC cuts. It has a long and honourable history as one of the more thoughtful BBC news programmes and I am proud to have been associated with it for more than twenty years.

The British Museum has cancelled a Jewish Culture Month event on Ancient Israel and Judah due to ‘security concerns’.
If publicly-funded institutions cannot host such events without folding to pressure, serious questions arise about that funding.
