Part of what has traditionally distinguished conservatives from liberals is that we are not supposed to be tribal. We are supposed to be capable of debating ideas without immediately smearing, labeling, or excommunicating everyone who disagrees with us.

Or at least, we used to be.

Political debate should require more than attaching a label to someone and declaring the argument settled. Refute the premise. Present the facts. Explain why the conclusion is wrong. That is what serious people do.

I can defend every critique I make of any public political figure with evidence, reasoning, and their own words. I do not need to call someone a traitor, a grifter, an operative, or an enemy simply because I disagree with them.

Don’t get me wrong after saying the same thing for a year about certain people I go to the shorthand version of grifter but that’s after I initially spent I don’t know how many months laying out the case for why I believe that.

If your position cannot survive scrutiny without personal attacks, then the problem is not the person asking questions. The problem is your position.
