A couple additional points.

1. This data set seems to include natural deaths. That's probably not a huge factor, if only because the graph of children's deaths is close to their share in the population, not to their expected life expectancy from natural causes. That's the kind of tragic evidence that tells us most of the death toll is linked to the war.

2. That 2-to-1 ratio is probably even better than these graphs suggest (i.e., there was probably an even larger share of combatants and a smaller one of civilians), because a great many of the fighting-age men *below* the red line can be presumed to have been combatants. Hamas massively pressured capable men to join the war effort, including paying high sums (in Gazan terms) for teenagers down to age 16 to join the fighting ranks. The spike of fighting-age men were definitely combatants. But some portion of those not contained in that spike were probably also combatants.

3. If any of this seems wrong, if you know more or can think this through better, please enlighten. Obviously I'm hoping the data shows my country fought morally; I also want to know if I'm missing something fundamental that shows that it didn't.
