Only 26 out of 243 promises made by Ruto and Kenya Kwanza in 2022 have been completed, and that is why Kenyans are opposing the attempt to ask them to start thinking about Vision 2060, which pushes the political conversation another 34 years into the future.

We have to be very careful that Ruto does not take promises he made for his first five years, fail to finish them, then quietly box the same unfinished work inside Vision 2060 and ask Kenyans for more time.

Ruto is not stupid, and I Vision 2060 will become a major part of his 2027 campaign, where questions about what happened between 2022 and 2027 are replaced with speeches about what Kenya could become decades from now.

History gives us enough reason to be suspicious of this kind of politics, since leaders in Kazakhstan, Egypt and Zimbabwe etc have all sold distant national visions that later became closely tied to their own political messaging and continued stay in office.

Kenya can plan for 2060, but Ruto must first account for the promises that put him in State House, since a president elected for five years should not escape judgment by moving the deadline 34 years away.

Vision 2060 has now become Ruto’s unofficial 2027 campaign launch, and Kenyans should keep asking what happened to the promises he said he would deliver by 2027 before accepting another grand dream ending in 2060.
