@Kswing6@AndThatsBB Can point out the 5-7 mph jump in velocity over the last 20 years? If the new guns read faster surely that would show up in the data.
@BK3_eng@UmpScorecards There’s a chart of expected run values based on the situation (count and runners on base). Pretty sure they just subtract the expected run value before the call from the expected run value after the call to calculate the favor for that call.
@pottsie2602@iamcogs@MLB@Brewers Yeah they’ve got a lot of very smart people working on this stuff all the time. I would guess most teams have these numbers available internally but they aren’t publicly available yet. Hopefully soon.
@pottsie2602@iamcogs@MLB@Brewers It’s possible to calculate the difference by looking at numbers for balls that are pulled vs. up the middle vs. opposite field but doing that requires a lot of effort and know how that I don’t possess.
@pottsie2602@iamcogs@MLB@Brewers Not that I’m aware of. Difficult to quantify the benefit spray angles because balls that are pulled are going to spin differently and thus fly differently than balls that are hit to the opposite field. Generally I would say that pulled balls will slightly over perform xBA.
@pottsie2602@iamcogs@MLB@Brewers Doesn’t take spray angle (hit down the line vs hit to dead center) into account so if that ball was hit to dead center it’s an out pretty much every time. He pulled it so it went out but hit to most other parts of the field it’s caught.
@tangotiger@werter34r@billjamesonline Thanks for the detailed reply. The math write up helped a lot. Definitely helpful to see how these things get calculated rather than just saying “people smarter than me said it’s right so it probably is.”
@tangotiger@werter34r How did you figure out that 10 ER=1 WAR? Was there a separate calculation or was that just the coefficient that got you closest to the true WAR value? I’m a novice with anything beyond OPS, exit velo, and launch angle so I’m trying to understand where this all comes from.
@werter34r@tangotiger Yeah that makes sense. Forgot that it’s not actually the WAR formula just an approximation so it just needs to get close to real number.
@Mariano04230215 @Sickman22992341 @JMeerchaum@BLocsports Having worked and talked with some of the people behind a lot of modern baseball philosophy I truly believe in what’s happening. I think it’s hard to see for most fans but having seen some of what’s behind the curtain I think things are moving in the right direction.
@Mariano04230215 @Sickman22992341 @JMeerchaum@BLocsports At some point we just have to realize teams are not going to hire people that make them worse. The people making these decisions are making their teams better whether we like/understand it or not. Though I agree with you that higher BA and more steals is more entertaining.
