@UpdatingOnRome Fall of the Russian Caesar (Czar) 1917, Fall of the German and Austrian Caesars (Kaiser) 1918, Fall of the Ottoman Empire 1922, since the Sultan had a legitimate claim to the title Caesar which had been recognized by the E Orthodox patriarch after the conquest of Constantinople.
In Sumerian the words "arrow" "life" and "rib" are homophones, sharing the cuneiform sign "ti" (𒋾). So "God took life from man" in Sumarian would be written identically to "God took a rib from man." (Doesn't work in Hebrew, but given the relationship between Sumerian and Biblical stories like the great flood etc., a reasonable chance this was first expressed in Sumerian.)
@davidpdeavel@StarTribune Had my roof replaced recently. Contractor told me they had 12 crews but after they'd all been checked by ICE they were down to 7 crews.
@davidpdeavel They abolished ALL the remedial math and English classes in the Cal State system. Didn't change the admission standards. (Half all all freshmen were required to take one or both before this.) Oh, and then they pushed really hard to improve our 5 yr graduation rate.
@Heavenly_Race_ You should see some of my final exams. I don't know how many times I've thought, "you got THAT from what I said in class?" (and then hope they don't go telling people that I taught them the misconception.)
@CartersPeanuts Many schools eliminated remedial math and now those students go into regular first year math. Then they put pressure on the professors to INCREASE the pass rate. That integrity is getting slowly eroded (and sometimes not so slowly).
@davidpdeavel This was a real moral quandary for me. If I grade accurately, I'm punishing the students silly enough to take my classes. Tough grading needs to be mandated system wide, otherwise it won't work.
@ArtemisConsort Yes, I can say absolutely that I have read all the sources I cited, and I am shocked that there are academics out there who don't. Utterly shocked. I mean, what???
