@Bludn_Gore Smoking rates are at historic lows, however. Whatever the claim might be about the black market, it's hard to argue with the fact that smoking is now less common now than ever before.
@MarkMcGrathCFP@Andrea51660828 Just imagine the crash happens... right when you finish DCA in a year, at a higher average price.
DCA might make you feel a bit better (I'm as guilty of it as anyone else) but objectively speaking the risk of stocks going up more over that period is higher.
@ZetaMinorAM@DHughesy No, government demand crowds out private demand.
There's a theory that if the economy is struggling (recession) spending is helpful to keep people working. That's certainly not an issue right now; Inflation is a problem right now which means there's more demand than supply
@hallorannotes@TruthFairy131 Whole thread is weird. This happens everywhere when you lock out new life, heritage protect everything and make the next generation a spectator in their own cities.
Deregulate construction and zoning, let people build and do what they want and they'll care again.
@47Daze@TruthFairy131 And all the pearl-clutching homeowners in the suburb that stop anything and everything that might bring in more people and life to the suburb and main streets.
It's this way for a reason, and it's not because of immigrants.
@ZetaMinorAM@DHughesy Tax takes resources owned by private taxpayers and moves them to the control of government, who invariably get less done with that money than private people do.
It's only good if you're getting something valuable that wouldn't be done better privately.
@Jansant@DHughesy@BrentHodgson The liberals being worse at some point is relevant, but Labor has proven with these two terms they have no interest at all in fixing it.
The liberals are at least claiming to do more, and in fairness spending was going down towards the end of their term pre and post covid.
@highonlifedeal2@orrdavid Nuke power is a dead end unless it can get rid of the steam turbine part.
Renewables + batteries is so clearly the superior new technology that I doubt there's much private interest in deploying anything else.
@thepupil11 Would you short at this price?
If yes, hang onto it. If you aren't getting paid carry use a synthetic short. Now you're earning 4%/y to maintain the short even if it goes nowhere.
@sonicdog43@David_McMahon75 Because Labor just obliterated local incentives to invest, then when they realised another policy in basically the same form was destroying foreign investment rolled that back.
It's just deaf to the local populace of investors and savers.
@DerekFranc90653 If the coalition had paid a little more respect to debt during their term this would work better. If you're going to attack Labor for debt make sure you don't increase it by the same amount in your term..
Still gonna vote them but they dug this hole themselves.
@TSOH_Investing@thepupil11 They still have to double earnings to get there.
Expensive, slow compounders are going to get shafted in this environment of rising rates IMO
@Thelandofark@chrisbrycki@matt_barrie Even that doesn't make sense. Reduced investment somehow making a good cheaper long term?
This is just a dog all round driven by socialists with no understanding of economics
@orrdavid From the anti-correlation benefit of something that goes down in crashes even if it's not adding returns? - Well, these days 4% from carry :')
Ever look at shorts in AU? Lots of big, very expensive, zero growth companies (CBA/WES/WOW/COL)
@SenWarren And what about when you get free electricity on the middle of the day because solar production outstrips demand (becoming more common in AU)? Going to make that illegal as well?
@TajirKhan20@Fierce__beast@Merridew__ An alternative if options are available is synthetic shorts.
It's a real pain because of the 100 unit per option, so if SP is too high you can't short because it'll be oversized, but otherwise you get the carry interest with a synthetic that you won't get from IBKR
@orrdavid There's something vaguely hilarious about mentioning Situational Awareness offhand a few months before they blew themselves up doing exactly what you advise against.
@orrdavid Worse comes to worse you go get a trade qual or something.
'Tis my attitude as an SWE. You can't tell other people to stuff it if you can't acknowledge you'll need to find another career yourself.
