Hi #MedTwitter! My name is Jordan, an MS4 @GWSMHS applying to combined pediatrics/anesthesiology in #Match2024. I am passionate about child health advocacy and injury prevention. My interests include reading, college football, and exploring new restaurants. Excited to connect!
How can you reduce the risk of button battery injury? There are many things you can do at home such as storing batteries out of reach, buying only buttons in child resistant packaging, and buying products that can only be opened with a tool #ButtonBatterySafety
Reese's Law was passed in 2022 that requires the Consumer Product Safety Commission to require child-resistant closures on products containing button batteries. It also requires clear warning labels on all packaging #ButtonBatterySafety
Giving 2 teaspoons of honey can be helpful and protective against injury if your child is one year or older! However, if you do not have honey readily available, DO NOT stop at the store. It is better to go straight to the Emergency Department #ButtonBatterySafety
If your child has swallowed a button battery, you may notice symptoms such as coughing, gagging, difficulty breathing, stomach pain, or vomiting #ButtonBatterySafety
What should you do if you think your child has swallowed a button battery? Immediately call the Battery Ingestion Hotline (1-800-498-8666) or 911. #buttonBatterySafety
From 2011-2021, 54,300 emergency department visits and 25 deaths were due to button battery exposure with 78% of these visits being kids 6 years or younger. #ButtonBatterySafety
Why are button batteries dangerous? Swallowing one can cause significant damage to the esophagus and prompt treatment is required to prevent severe injury #ButtonBatterySafety
