At the Lake Clifton #GreatCockyCount workshop with @BirdlifeOz. Eucalypts & Banksias are a traditional food source for Black Cockatoos, though with our forests and woodlands disappearing the cockatoos have adapted their diet to include plants like the Cape Lilac @AusLandcare

The Holly-Leaved Banksia can reach to 10 meters. The leaves of this Banksia resemble those of Holly and their flowers (occur throughout the year) change colour with age, firstly appearing cream or yellow and then darkening to pink and finally red. @PeelHarveyCC @AusLandcare

The Candlestick Banksia typically grows as a tree up to 10 meters in height. This species flowers from October through to February, flowers are cylindrical in form with their bright yellow attracting insects and birds, including Carnaby’s Cockatoos. @PeelHarveyCC @AusLandcare
Firewood Banksias are identifiable by their grey-green foliage and cylindrical flowers appearing from Feb through to Oct. Their flowers come in combinations of pink, red, and orange and are rich in pollen, while their seeds are an important food source for Carnaby’s cockatoos.
