Civilization began with the builder.
Before man could raise cities, establish laws, or preserve the record of his deeds, he first learned to fashion a settled habitation. He gathered stone, shaped timber, raised walls, and made for himself a place of order amid the uncertainty of nature. In this sense, the art of building stands among the earliest and noblest of human crafts.
Religion itself soon took architectural form. Men reared altars for sacrifice, enclosed sanctuaries for prayer, and piled stones above the graves of their dead. Faith, awe, pity, consolation, memory, and hope found expression in altar, temple, cairn, and sacred enclosure. History and architecture grew together, each bearing witness to the aspirations of mankind.
How fitting, then, that Masonry should take the builder and his art as the foundation of its system.
The Lodge presents life under the image of a temple continually building and being built upon. Its tools become emblems of those truths which produce purity of character, stability of society, and harmony among men. Its labor seeks the upbuilding of humanity in Faith, Freedom, and Friendship.
The Mason therefore finds dignity in labor and unity in the common work of mankind. Every worthy act becomes a stone. Every disciplined virtue gives strength to the wall. Every obligation faithfully fulfilled adds something to the temple of human life.
So long as Masonry remains faithful to this constructive Ideal, it remains joined to the ancient genius by which mankind has raised itself from the rough ground toward order, beauty, and light.
Freemasonry is an ancient and honorable institution: ancient no doubt it is, as having subsisted from time immemorial; and honorable it must be acknowledged to be, as by natural tendency it conduces to make those so who are obedient to its precepts.
To so high an eminence has its credit been advanced that in every age Monarchs themselves have been promoters of the art, have not thought it derogatory from their dignity to exchange the scepter for the trowel, have patronized our mysteries and joined in our Assemblies.
